Susan Boyts Halkin
Susan has been the director of the school since
1979. She is also the founder of the school. She received her
education at the College of Dupage in Wheaton, Illinois. Susan
was trained at the Meca Seton Montessori Teacher Training Center
in Clarendon Hills, Illinois. In 1974 Susan received her Montessori
certification through the American Montessori Society.
After teaching for 2 years at Meca Seton Little
People's Montessori School, she moved to Rochester, N.Y. She
taught one school year at the Greece Montessori School. From
there it was on to Colorado. Susan taught at a couple of Montessori
schools in Denver before moving to Longmont. In Longmont, she
taught at the Longmont Montessori School, which is now the Gateway
Montessori School.
In 1979 a Board of Directors established the
nonprofit corporation The Children's House of Weld County. Susan
Boyts was hired as the Director of the schoool. The school was
housed in the Rinn United Methodist Church.
In 1984 Susan married Paul Halkin at the Rinn
United Methodist Church. Since Paul had a five-year-old daughter,
they started with an instant family! In 1987 a son, Jesse, was
born to the couple. Susan's family resides at the original site
of the Rinn Valley Grange which Paul remodeled into a home.
Susan continues to be the Director of the school.
She is also the head teacher of the Preschool class. You will
find her in the classroom from 8:30 am to 11:30 am daily. In
the afternoons, she does the administrative work for the school.
She is very committed to the community as she continues to offer
a quality Montessori environment for the children in the area.
